Overview

Title: Ready Mix Lab QC Technician

Location: Houston, TX

Reports to: Quality Control Manager

Salary: Pay is dependent upon experience and will be discussed during the consideration process

Summary
The Ready-Mix Lab QC Technician is responsible for performing quality control tests on ready-mix concrete, primarily in a laboratory setting, to ensure compliance with industry standards and project specifications. The role involves sampling materials, testing concrete cylinders, conducting trial batches, analyzing raw materials, and accurately documenting and reporting findings to the QC Manager.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Support a culture that promotes safety as the top priority while ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and company regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Collect concrete and aggregate samples according to industry standards (e.g., ASTM, ACI).
  • Plant and Lab trial batch testing of fresh Ready-Mix concrete, including slump testing, unit weights, air testing, flexural beams, and compressive cylinders.
  • Conduct compressive strength tests on hardened concrete samples. Perform tests on all aggregates.
  • Enter testing data daily into our quality control software.
  • Interpret testing results and effectively communicate results.
  • Report on findings daily to QC Manager to ensure materials specifications are met. Assist in troubleshooting and corrective actions.
  • Travel to plants to conduct testing and collect materials samples as needed. Occasional long-distance travel is required.
  • Coordinate laboratory trial batches by gathering materials and scheduling personnel to complete batches according to specifications.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required. College or vocational training is preferred.
  • Two years' previous experience in concrete quality control is preferred.
  • Must have a basic understanding of construction materials, specifically Ready-Mix concrete.
  • Must be able to interpret test results and communicate findings with supervisors.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to type and use keyboards accurately. Also have knowledge of Internet software, Excel Spreadsheet and Word Processing software.
  • ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician - Grade 1 Certification preferred.
  • Standard driver's license is required.

Other Requirements:
Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
