Safety & Environmental Coordinator (Administrative)



The Safety Coordinator is responsible for the compliance of all city, county, state and federal safety and environmental compliance policies for Safe Harbor Marina/Service Facilities. This includes facility staff, all contractors and all vessels. Also responsible for all required safety and environmental compliance reporting. The position reports to the Health, Safety and Environmental Manager. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs formal and informal inspections of all work sites to monitor compliance with safety standards and to identify and record potential hazards; works with supervisors and employees to develop effective solutions for any problems that may be found.
  • Prepares, provides and conducts training and instruction in various safety related topics to employees and supervisors.
  • Organizes meetings, etc. designed to address safety issues.
  • Develop weekly safety topics / briefs for distribution.
  • Have knowledge of Scaffolding and its proper erection and inspection
  • Ensure we are Federal EPA and State of Florida DEP Environmental compliant to ensure a safe environment on land and surrounding Marina waters.
  • Conduct investigations of work related property damage accidents, injuries and near miss incidents to establish causal factors and to determine workable means to prevent recurrences. Prepares concise but accurate reports of findings and recommendations.
  • Investigates and satisfactorily resolves employee complaints or issues involving potentially unsafe or unhealthful working conditions.
  • Assists in the administration of several programs including personal protective equipment, medical surveillance, workers' compensation, etc.
  • Performs the duties of a Shipyard Competent Person, as directed by the Certified Marine Chemist, on a daily basis.
  • Have ability to enter into and out of Vessel Tanks, Voids, Spaces, often in tight, restricted quarters and declaring those spaces as Safe for Work
  • Must serve as a member of the Facility Emergency Response Team (ERT). Part of this role is to respond to medical emergencies, chemical spills and other emergencies as part of a coordinated team and provides guidance and expertise in these situations.
  • As a member of the ERT, you must be able to meet the physical demands of the role which include the ability to wear a respirator, enter small cramped spaces if necessary. Must remain clean shaven to wear a respirator.
  • Training may be provided by the company, as necessary in order to carry out assigned duties.
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

 Safety and Environmental Responsibilities

  • Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.
  • Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area.
  • Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately. 

Work Environment

  • Environmental exposures are similar to those found in medium size Shipyards, and may include noise, tropical heat, cold, vibration, dust, fumes and smoke.
  • Work may be carried out indoors or outdoors, and may involve exposure to inclement weather conditions.

Technical and Physical Requirements 

  • Associates Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, or engineering, chemistry related field. (Bachelor's preferred)
  • 2-5 years of HS&E Experience.
  • Ability to achieve OSHA Outreach instructor.
  • Computer skills (MS Office or similar).
  • Familiarity with U.S. Coast Guard, OSHA, EPA, and other maritime regulations
  • Ability to conduct safety briefings and toolbox talks
