Chaplain (Personal Services)



Position: Chaplain
Reports to: Academic Dean, Hargrave Military Academy

Education/Experience:

Bachelors degree or equivalent experience as a pastor, youth pastor, or chaplain preferred

Master of Divinity or similar degree strongly preferred

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Chaplain Responsibilities:

Leads worship services as required by the school calendar and as needed in accord with special events (banquets, funerals, emergencies, etc).

Regularly prepares and delivers chapel talks, sermons for Thursday, Sunday morning, and Sunday evening services.

Organizes speakers and a program for the annual Spiritual Emphasis Week and any other special chapel services.

Executes a liturgy for the various chapel services that encourages and facilitates Cadet participation, and suits the diverse constituency of the Corps of Cadets

Counsels those with spiritual needs and provides comfort to the bereaved. Also counsels in non-religious areas as needed or required.

Routinely visits the students on the barracks, especially in the evenings.

Continues the ministry during Hargraves Summer Program in conjunction with the Summer Program Director, and according to the Summer Program schedule.

Provides supervision to and leads the Cadet Chapel Officer and his staff.

Advises the President and Administration regarding other faith traditions and their practices at Hargrave.

Provides appropriate instruction to the Corps of Cadets during Cadet Orientation regarding chapel services, behavioral expectations, and access to the Chaplain.

Build relationships with local congregations, and serves as the key contact point for church and faith relationships with the local community.

Pastoral Care Responsibilities:

Provides instruction and guidance to those seeking new faith in Christ.

Supports or coordinates wedding, funeral, baptism, and communion services as appropriate

Visits sick or injured students, employees and family members.

Academic Responsibilities:

Teachers Bible classes as part of the schools curriculum.

Provides recommendations to enhance the academys academic instruction in the Bible and the Christian faith.

Provides appropriate updates and communication to the Social Studies Department Chair and Academic Dean.

As a member of the faculty, supports the academic needs of the academy as required.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Manages the Faith Pillar budget and provides budget feedback to the Administration during budget planning each year.

Budgets for, plans, and executes Spiritual Emphasis Week.

Supports fundraising opportunities for the Faith Pillar and chapel facilities in coordination with the Advancement Office.

Provides support for, and coordinates with, the Young Life ministry on campus.

Provide support for and assist with other faith related programming like FCA.

Attends admissions events.

Provides supervision and support to other school and non-school groups using the chapel, including use of the audio and visual equipment, and all of its collateral equipment.

Coordinates maintenance and support services for the chapel as required.

Lives within 20 miles of campus.

Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

Support the school and its leadership.
