Lead Scientist - Innovation (Finance)

Job Description

The Lead Scientist will be responsible for scouting, identifying, and analyzing new technologies. They will be responsible for building relationships and collaborating with external partners, including start-ups, universities, national labs, and innovation ecosystems to utilize these technologies to broaden Honeywell Advanced Materials innovation capabilities. The successful candidate will utilize their broad experience in novel materials chemistry and leverage their material science expertise to identify and develop new and unique materials solutions to the current and emerging materials needs in the areas of data centers, advanced energy storage, electronics and life sciences.

Job Duties:

External Innovation (50%)

• Identify, analyze, and prioritize relevant open (external) innovation opportunities and ensure cross-functional feedback and internal alignment.

• Foster and promote outward focused curiosity to connect with outside experts in academia and industry. Build and maintain a robust network of startups, academics, accelerators, and incubators in the relevant scientific fields

• Summarize background technical research and analysis, and aggregate data to recommend a partner management strategy.

Internal Discovery (50%)

• Work closely with cross-functional R&D teams to develop new materials / new formulations, and contribute to the design, plan and execute technical routes for the proposed novel materials.

• Translate scientific hypotheses into scalable technical routes, considering manufacturability, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.

• Stay current with industry trends, competitor products, and emerging technologies to identify novel materials and bring new ideas to the organization.

Cross-Cutting Responsibilities

• Manage project timelines and deliverables across both internal and external initiatives.

• Coordinate with legal and IP teams to manage agreements (e.g. non-disclosure agreement, joint development agreement, testing service agreement, term sheet, etc.) and protect intellectual property.

• Strict adherence to established safety policies and procedures.

YOU MUST HAVE

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as the sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics
  • 7+ years of relevant experience managing innovation projects
  • Strong background in areas such as materials science, electronics, semiconductor, or related fields

  • Advanced Degree in Chemistry, Material Science or polymer science, Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Strong critical thinking ability to gauge and identify appropriate opportunities
  • Scientific breadth, strong personal networks, curiosity, creativity, and desire to learn
  • Desire and abilities to identify, develop, and improve new technical concepts and products.
  • Experience in fluorochemical, thermal management materials or electronic materials will be considered a plus.
  • Experience in corporate innovation, venture scouting, or startup ecosystems.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a passion for scientific discovery.
  • Understanding of and ability to communicate on a broad range of topics related to advanced materials space and market drivers
  • Strong organizational skills and experience managing long-term, complex projects from concept to completion.

This position is intended to convey to the new, independent company, to be named Solstice Advanced Materials when the separation occurs. This is expected to occur in late 2025 or early 2026.

The annual base salary range for this position is $150 - $187k. This position is incentive eligible. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline.
