Job Summary
The overall purpose of this position is to ensure a high-level of success of IEEE's open access multidisciplinary journal, IEEE Access. The goal is to provide an IEEE-wide journal that features standardized peer review, editorial selection and rapid publication processes. Submissions will be judged on technical presentation of authors' original work and its interest to readers - not its scientific novelty or perceived impact on the field. This position will encourage the submission of practical articles dealing with experimental methods, technology applications and manufacturing techniques. The publication will be completely open access with support from article processing changes paid by authors (or their funders/employers), and all readers will access these articles for free. The position is based in IEEE's Piscataway, NJ headquarters.

The Editor, IEEE Access will assist the Managing Editor and the Editor-in-Chief in:
• Streamlining the review process to the shortest interval possible without compromising quality
• Ensuring, as a quality standard, that all articles be tested for plagiarism before publication
• Emphasizing applications-oriented and multidisciplinary articles

The Editor, AE of IEEE Access is expected to guide and serve the Editorial Board and recommend the type of content that is best suited to meet the goals and objectives of this new publication. The AE also recommends and implements new types of content that can be displayed in new ways or using multimedia. He or she may also recommend an extension of the current publication or build on the IEEE Access name in new applications or media types.

The successful candidate will ensure that the publication's web site stays current and makes new information available on a regular basis. The AE will work with IEEE Marketing, Product Management and Product Design to promote this publication to authors, and promote the content and increase awareness of the publication.


Key Responsibilities
  • Advises and assists the volunteer Editor-in-Chief (EIC) and Editorial Board in the strategic planning and execution of IEEE Access' editorial program. The AE will manage the peer review process and peer review systems for this journal in accordance with PSPB's policies and processes that are defined by the Access Editorial Board. In this capacity the AE:
  • o May review, critique, and dispose of all submitted manuscripts in consultation with the Editorial Board and associated reviewers.
  • o Guides reviewers and authors in preparing material for publication.
  • o Drafts author and reviewer correspondence on behalf of the EIC
  • o Resolves author/reviewer problems and conflicts, as required.
  • Conducts and assists in misconduct and ethical investigations as needed.
  • Interfaces with editorial production staff, and other staff and volunteer organizations within and outside the IEEE for rapid publication.
  • Contributes new content to the IEEE Access web site regularly.
  • Facilitates planning and execution of annual IEEE Access Editorial Board Meeting.
  • Works with IEEE Marketing or other outside promotional organizations to develop a strategy and implement a plan to raise awareness of IEEE Access. The purpose of the promotion is to increase author submissions to publication.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in related field Req
  • Master's or other advanced degree Req
  • PhD in engineering Pref

Work Experience

  • 4-7 years post-graduate in a publishing or industry position. Req

Skills and Requirements

  • Experience in publication planning, scheduling, and knowledge of the publications process is important to keeping the publication current and on schedule. Ability to balance editorial consensus of the Editorial Board with the best business interests of the IEEE is necessary.
  • The ability to write well and critique authors/contributors, especially with regard to highly technical and complex proposals, is also a key skill set for this position.
  • Must be a savvy knowledge worker who seeks out technology solutions to business challenges.
  • Must have knowledge of online peer review systems, such as ScholarOne Manuscripts or Aries Editorial Manager are preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint, and e-mail systems, such as Microsoft Outlook or Gmail, are required.

Other Requirements:
As defined in IEEE Policies, individuals currently serving on an IEEE board or committee are not eligible to apply.
